"Dancing is one of the great pleasures of life. When we dance beyond any expected form or style we spontaneously create the dance by exploring and releasing our natural flow of feelings. By Trance or Ecstatic Dancing we actually move our consciousness into spontaneous healing - spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically." Frank Natale
"Ecstatic" from the Greek "ekstasis" means displacement, trance, to take flight, or to drive out of one's senses. Ecstatic/Trance dance is a ritual that is thousands of years old and uses authentic movement , and drum beats to achieve meditative and transformative states of consciousness.
Trance Dance is a unique blend of body movement, healing sounds, dynamic percussive rhythms, transformational breathing techniques, and the innovative use of a blindfold or bandana - together stimulating a 'trance' state that promotes spiritual awakenings, mental clarity, physical stamina and emotional well-being.
Driven by the specific music and sounds Trance Dance takes participants on an 'inner journey' not limited to our normal perceptions of space/time. Ritual trance journeys have been a vital part of shamanic and eastern dance cultures for thousands of years. Our contemporary approach to Trance Dance brings together the richness of these ancient rituals with some startlingly effective modern techniques.
Trance Dance's primary focus is on healing and spiritual evolution. By dancing within the seclusion of darkness participants discover parallel realities where solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems are possible. Through Trance Dance we disappear, becoming more like spirit, and simultaneously less attached to life's ordinary difficulties, making it possible at these moments to let these problems go.
Jim Mercer, a local south coast resident, will present this wintertime Trance/ ecstatic dance experience. He studies yoga, meditation, consciousness, and dance movement. Join us in this winter season Ecstatic dance at the Shattuck gallery.
We encourage you to wear comfortable clothing and socks or bare feet for optimal movement, and bring a cloth or bandana for a blindfold. The blindfold helps to deepen the experience by reducing self-consciousness and heightening all of the other senses.
No experience necessary, all levels and ages welcome.
Arrive on time as latecomers will NOT be admitted.
