Art and Food in Tuscany with Rosemary and Tony Melli and Bill Shattuck
April 23-29, 2017
Dedee Shattuck Gallery is partnering with Food. Stories. Travel for an exciting new travel opportunity to Tuscany!
Tuscany is the cradle of the Renaissance and of the Italian language. Just two of many reasons to be excited to discover the region that best represents the balance of strikingly different northern and southern Italy. On this 6-night tour you will experience the authentic Tuscan life with its distinctive cuisine through visits to local artists and small, local producers, including one former Slow Food Presidium (projects that once promoted ‘endangered foods’ but were so successful, their foods are no longer at risk!) and local agriturismi, a family-run “farm stay” combining agriculture and tourism, usually sourcing their ingredients mostly locally.
You’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet local artists and explore and discuss the culture and traditions in this magic corner of Italy accompanied by a special host: Bill Shattuck, former instructor at The University of Massachusetts in Dartmouth, will share his expertise in composition, drawing and painting. Why not take advantage of the countryside or some of the historic towns to draw inspiration for sketching, painting or simply relaxing in the heart of Tuscany?
You will discover local wines, olive oil, and cheese through tastings and visits, learn about local recipes with a hands-on cooking class, and explore the historic towns of Florence, Montalcino, Siena, Pienza, the UNESCO Site of Val d'Orcia, Cortona, and Lucca, accompanied by your experienced Tour Leaders and two other special hosts: Rosemary and Tony Melli are artisans food experts and co-owners of Olio di Melli specializing in Italian specialty products imported to Massachusetts.
This is your vacation so just let us know what activity you prefer to enjoy with us. Please make sure not to miss out on relaxing at your agriturismo, by the pool, swimming in the sea, or taking a walk on one of the local “strade bianche” (the dirt roads trails available in the area of Tuscany).
