Live Audio/Visual Presentation by author Frederick Thurber
Wednesday, July 27th - 6:30pm to 7:30pm
Listen to wiseacre mockingbirds, blowhard toads, impish chipmunks, Cockney otters, snarky literary agents, conspiratorial weasels, badgers with a brogue, and sweet singing water rats tell their story in this entertaining and amusing audio/visual presentation.
Frederick and Amy Thurber describe their long quest to find a voice for the characters in their audiobook, In the Wake of the Willows. This book is a sequel to The Wind in Willows, but set on our very own Westport River, Cherry & Webb beach, Allens Pond, and in the Paquachuck Inn. The book features sailing adventures in wooden boats, scavenger hunts, beach parties, amusing characters, and a mysterious prophecy.
Follow the Thurbers’ search for the perfect voice for their little friends along The River. Join us and listen to audition tapes from some talented student actresses from a very special theater arts department. Get to hear the winner of the auditions, Madeleine Barker, a young lady of a thousand voices, and listen to amusing clips from her recordings.
Praise for In the Wake of the Willows
“Nobody who ever read The Wind in the Willows wants it to ever end. Thank you, Frederick Thurber, for this delightfully worthy sequel, in a fresh new setting. I love it!” — Sy Montgomery, author of The Soul of an Octopus.
“Charm, fun, adventure; the sparkle of light on water and wit in words. Thurber layers his own deft imagination onto a beloved classic, and returns us to a world lost to most of us — one that he never left.” — Dominique Browning, editor emeritus House & Garden.
“In the Wake of the Willows is delightful, energetic, and funny.” — Carl Safina, Macarthur-winning ecologist and award-winning author.
Praise for the audio version of In the Wake of the Willows
“So delightful!” -- Mindy Todd, host of The Point on WCAI Cape and Islands National Public Radio
"Narrator Madeleine Barker takes on this New England version of England’s WIND IN THE WILLOWS. She delivers a variety of accents and tones for a group of inhabitants that includes its own Rat, Mole, Badger, Otter, and Weasel families. Barker’s lively narration adds to the sense of adventure, making her the perfect fit for this lyrically written tale" -- AudioFile magazine
